- It's one of the major adventures and gambles of the modern communication age: With no well-founded knowledge of the ocean floor, the relevant material characteristics or the chances of success, more than 3,000 kilometers of telegraph cable are laid from Europe to America. Electricity is generated by battery, because the generator is not yet ready for series production. The depths are surveyed using a plumbbob, because sonar technology has yet to be invented. Conventional nautical techniques are employed for navigation, because there are no satellites orbiting the earth. Halfway reliable weather forecasts are likewise unheard of. The only known is that the voyagers will in all probability encounter storms and rough seas. Even under these circumstances, enormous sums are invested with the aim of linking the two continents via cable. The prospect of considerable financial gain is tempting and there is great confidence that the Siemens brothers will be successful. But even if all these tremendous challenges can be astered, there's still one more unknown in the equation: the competition is renowned for having no qualms when it comes to eliminating bothersome competitors.
